A key snapped off in the lock. Here is what happens next.
Navarre Emergency Lockout does one thing: getting broken keys out of locks and getting the lock working again afterwards. Door cylinders, deadbolts, mailbox and cabinet locks, padlocks and ignitions. Licensed and insured.
The most useful thing we can tell you in the first sixty seconds is what not to do, because most of the expensive damage on this kind of call is done by the owner in the ten minutes before we arrive, not by the break itself. A key that snapped cleanly with the fragment still sitting square in the plug is usually a straightforward recovery. The same key after somebody has been at it with pliers and a screwdriver frequently is not.
What NOT to do before we get there
- Do not grab it with pliers. If a sliver is showing, this is the single most tempting move and the one that causes the most damage. Pliers crush the exposed brass into a burr, and the burr is what jams the fragment against the plug wall. What was a pull becomes a job.
- Do not keep turning the key or the plug. Turning the plug away from its rest position traps the fragment behind the pins. Almost every extraction tool needs the plug back at zero, so turning it adds a step before anything else can happen.
- Do not spray oil or penetrating fluid into the keyway. It feels productive and it is the worst thing for a coastal lock. Oil holds the salt and fine sand already inside the cylinder and turns it into grinding paste. If the fragment does come out, the lock you saved now fails a few months later.
- Do not use super glue. The internet loves this one. Glue does not bond well to the shape available, it does bond well to the plug, and a glued-in fragment turns a recovery into a cylinder replacement.
- Do not dig with a screwdriver, a knife or a paperclip. Scratching the plug wall and bending pins converts a mechanical problem into a rebuild.
- Do not force the other half of the key back in. Pushing the broken key in behind the fragment drives it deeper and past the point where it can be gripped.
- Do not keep using the door. If the fragment is in an exterior lock and the door is still open, leave it open or secure it another way rather than closing a lock you cannot reopen.
If none of that has happened yet, say so when you call. It genuinely changes what the job looks like.
Why the key broke
Keys almost never break because of one bad moment. They break because of a slow process that has a visible warning stage, which is why we spend time on the cause instead of just handing back the two halves.
Metal fatigue
Most keys are brass or a nickel-brass alloy, chosen because it is soft enough to cut and kind to the pins. Soft metal work-hardens. Every twist flexes the blade slightly, and after thousands of cycles microscopic cracks grow at the point of highest stress, which is the shoulder where the blade meets the bow, or the base of the deepest cut. The key does not fail on the day it is weakest; it fails on the day the flex exceeds what is left.
Worn bitting
The cuts along the key blade wear down. As they shallow out, the key stops lifting the pins exactly to the shear line, and it needs a little wiggle or a little extra force to turn. That extra force is the load that finishes the crack. A key that you have to jiggle is a key announcing its retirement.
Copies of copies
Every duplication is cut from the previous key, so each generation drifts a little further from the original code, and the blank may be thinner than the factory one. A fourth-generation copy off a worn original is a key with less material at the weak point and worse pin alignment.
Using the key as a handle
Pulling a sticking door closed by the key, or using the key to lever a misaligned deadbolt, applies bending force the blade was never designed for. This is the most common cause we see on doors that have settled.
The lock, not the key
A cylinder full of salt film and sand needs more torque to turn. A deadbolt fighting a misaligned strike needs more torque. A binding latch needs more torque. In all three cases the key is the weakest part of the chain and the key is what gives way. Replacing the key without addressing the cylinder or the door just schedules the next break.
Why it happens so often on this coast
Salt-laden air reaches every exterior cylinder in Navarre and Navarre Beach, and it works from the inside out. Salt film forms on the pins and the plug wall, humidity keeps it damp, and airborne sand adds abrasive. The result is a cylinder that turns a little harder every month. Add wooden doors that swell in August humidity, and a lock that was smooth in March is loading the key hard by summer.
The tell is always the same and always ignored: the key started feeling stiff weeks ago. That stiffness was the repair opportunity. Cleaning and servicing a stiff cylinder is a small job. Extraction plus a new cylinder is not.
How extraction is actually approached
We describe the reasoning and the tooling categories here. We do not publish technique, and no honest locksmith site should.
The first step is diagnosis rather than tooling. How deep is the fragment, is any of it protruding, has the plug been rotated away from its rest position, is the fragment intact or has it split lengthwise, and is the lock a pin tumbler, a wafer lock or something else. Those answers decide everything that follows, and getting them wrong is what causes damage.
Extraction tools are thin, hardened, purpose-shaped implements designed to enter the keyway alongside the fragment without disturbing the pin stack, engage the fragment's own cuts, and draw it straight out along the axis it went in. The reason this works and pliers do not is that it is a straight pull along the correct path, with no crushing and no lateral force against the plug wall. Some are toothed to catch a cut; some work in opposed pairs to grip both flanks; the choice depends on the fragment.
Two things determine success more than the tool: the plug being back at its rest position so the fragment is not pinched by the pins, and the fragment not having been deformed beforehand. That is the whole reason the do-not list above is at the top of this page.
Afterwards we test the cylinder properly. A lock that just endured a break rarely emerges perfect, and finding a bent pin or a scored plug at the end of the visit is much better than you finding it at eleven at night.
When the cylinder is finished too
Sometimes extraction is not the end of the story, and we would rather say so than hand back a lock that is going to fail again.
- The fragment split lengthwise and shed brass into the pin chambers.
- Pins are bent or the springs are compressed and no longer returning fully.
- The plug wall is scored from a previous attempt with a screwdriver.
- Corrosion is advanced enough that the plug drags with no key in it at all.
- The cylinder is old, worn builder-grade hardware where a replacement costs less than the labour to nurse it.
In those cases the honest sequence is extraction, then a new cylinder, and where you have several doors it is usually worth keying the new cylinder to match the others so you are not adding another key to the ring.
Getting a working key back
Recovering the fragment gives you a hole in a door, not a way in. The replacement key is its own decision.
Copying the surviving half is the fast option and often the wrong one, because that half is the worn original that caused the break. A better result comes from cutting a fresh key to the lock's original code, either read from the cylinder or decoded from it, which produces a key with full-depth cuts rather than a copy of a tired one. On a house where several keys are floating around from a purchase or a rental turnover, this is also the natural moment to rekey and reset who has access, rather than duplicating the problem.
Fragments in things that are not front doors
- Deadbolts are the most common by a distance, because they take the most torque and because a misaligned bolt makes people force the key.
- Mailbox and cluster-box locks use small wafer cylinders and small keys, so they break easily. Cluster boxes serving a group of addresses are postal property, and the postal service controls that lock rather than a locksmith.
- Cabinet, desk and file locks use thin flat keys that snap readily. The cylinders are usually inexpensive to replace once the fragment is out.
- Padlocks that have lived outdoors on this coast are frequently seized rather than merely blocked, and the fragment is a symptom.
- Ignitions and car doors add the complication that the key may also carry a transponder chip. Recovering the fragment and cutting a blade is only part of the job if the vehicle also has to recognise the key electronically.
Preventing the next one
- Retire keys that need jiggling. That is wear, and wear is the warning.
- Cut replacements from the code rather than from a worn copy where possible.
- Service a stiff exterior cylinder instead of pushing harder. Dry film lubricant, never oil.
- Fix the door, not just the lock: a deadbolt that does not glide into the strike is loading every key you own.
- Keep a spare key somewhere other than the ring you carry, so a break is an inconvenience instead of a lockout.
- Do not carry a door key on the same ring as a heavy bunch. Weight hanging off a key in a lock bends the blade.

Common questions
Part of the key is sticking out. Can I just pull it?
If it slides out with light finger pressure, yes. If it needs pliers, stop. Pliers crush the brass into a burr that jams the fragment against the plug wall and turns a simple pull into a real job.
Will the lock still work afterwards?
Usually. A clean break recovered without prior damage normally leaves a serviceable cylinder. A fragment that split, bent pins, or a plug scored by a screwdriver often means the cylinder gets replaced.
Should I spray lubricant into the lock first?
No. Penetrating oil holds the salt and sand already inside a coastal cylinder and turns it into grinding paste. Even if the fragment comes out, the lock is damaged for later.
Can I have a new key cut from the half I still have?
It can be done, but that half is usually the worn key that caused the break. Cutting a fresh key to the lock's original code gives full-depth cuts and a key that will not fail the same way.
Why did my key snap when I barely touched it?
The crack was already there. Brass work-hardens over thousands of turns, and cracks grow at the shoulder or the deepest cut. The final turn is the last straw, not the cause.
My key broke in the ignition. Same job?
The extraction is similar in principle, but a vehicle key may also carry a transponder chip. Recovering the fragment and cutting a blade only gets you a key that fits; the vehicle may still need to recognise it electronically.
